The Eastern African region coral reefs and mangroves




The Eastern African region is fringed w ith coral reefs and mangroves. The Indian Ocean hosts an abundant amount of fish w ith at least 3,000 varieties of shore fish. The mangrove sw amps provide oysters, crabs and mullet for the commercial market. How ever recent studies undertaken by UNEP in 1981 found that damage to coral reefs was widespread. The region is a major oil tanker route and suffers from oil pollution throughout the coastal zone. In addition land-based sources of pollution from fertilizers, industry, untreated sewage and litter and deforestation are also common resulting in problems such as eutrophication and excess sedimentation.
