Water desalination has become one of the sources of water supply in many countries, especially in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) where the renewable resources are limited. Water desalination can provide unlimited and constant supply of high-quality drinking water and reduces pressure on freshwater ecosystems and groundwater resources. However, as the capacity installed worldwide increases at a rapid pace, increasing concerns are also expressed over potential negative impacts of the desalination activity on the environment.
