USFS Project

The USFS Project was funded by the USDA, Forest Service International Programs, through USAID, and in July 2021 established a strategic partnership with BIOFUND to strengthen Mozambique’s Network of Protected Areas.

The project was designed to support both the public and private sectors in two main areas:

Support to the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC)

The project strengthened ANAC’s technical capacities, enabling professionals to efficiently manage geo-data from Conservation Areas. This support included tools and protocols that connected different platforms and instruments, promoting improved decision-making, planning, and conservation monitoring.

Support to the Lugenda Wildlife Reserve (LUWIRE)

The project contributed to strengthening community-based ecosystem management and the long-term conservation of wildlife. Among the implemented initiatives were:

Community-based natural resource management tools;

Establishment of community-managed safari camps;

Empowerment of women through the creation of small tailoring units;

Technical assistance in SMART Parks for law enforcement activities.

The USFS Project represented a joint effort to integrate conservation, community development, and innovation in the sustainable management of biodiversity in Mozambique.
