Maputo, 23 July 2026: The National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) will hold the Seminar to Disseminate the Results of the 2025 National Elephant and Large Mammal Census on 24 July 2026. The event represents an important milestone for biodiversity conservation in Mozambique.

The census was conducted between September and November 2025, with financial support from the Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity (BIOFUND), through the Biodiversity Conservation Programme funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and with technical support from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The survey was conducted by the Centre for Agriculture and Natural Resource Management Studies (CEAGRE), in partnership with BassAir Aviation and under the leadership of ANAC. It generated updated scientific information on the status of elephant and other large mammal populations in their main areas of occurrence in the country. The census provided data on their abundance, distribution, population trends, mortality levels and the main threats to their conservation.

The results provide an important basis for strengthening the management of Conservation Areas, defining public policies and biodiversity conservation strategies, and fulfilling Mozambique’s national and international commitments to wildlife protection.

The results dissemination seminar will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in a hybrid format, at the Montebelo Hotel Conference Centre in Maputo. It will bring together representatives of government institutions, cooperation partners, civil society organisations, the private sector, academia and other stakeholders involved in biodiversity conservation. The event will provide a platform for sharing the main census results and reflecting on the challenges and opportunities for wildlife conservation in the country.
