Investing in People to Strengthen Conservation: Biodiversity Conservation Programme Supports Capacity Building for ANAC's Newly Appointed Officials

The National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC) held an induction workshop from 13 to 15 July 2026 in Ponta do Ouro for newly appointed Park and National Reserve Administrators, Division Directors, Heads of Office, Department Heads and Section Heads. The initiative was designed to strengthen their technical, administrative and leadership capacities, contributing to more effective, transparent and coordinated management of Mozambique’s Conservation Areas.

Bringing together staff from ANAC Headquarters and managers from Conservation Areas across the country, the workshop provided a platform for learning, institutional alignment and the exchange of experiences on the responsibilities and challenges associated with their new roles.

Over the three-day programme, participants deepened their knowledge of the legal and policy framework for conservation, law enforcement and Conservation Area management, human resource management, institutional leadership and institutional communication, labour dispute management, human-wildlife conflict, and mechanisms for community participation in biodiversity conservation.

The programme also featured sessions on planning, monitoring and evaluation tools, ANAC’s institutional development, and conservation financing mechanisms. As part of these discussions, the Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity (BIOFUND) presented its role in mobilising financial resources for biodiversity conservation and supporting the sustainable management of Mozambique’s Conservation Areas.

The workshop also served as an opportunity to harmonise procedures, strengthen coordination between ANAC’s central and local structures, and foster a more integrated approach aligned with Mozambique’s national conservation priorities.

The induction workshop was organised by ANAC under the Biodiversity Conservation Programme, with support from BIOFUND and funding from the Government of Sweden. The Programme contributes to strengthening ANAC’s institutional capacity at both the central and Conservation Area levels, recognising that well-qualified workforce is essential to improving protected area management and safeguarding Mozambique’s natural heritage.
