The Bee Project was BIOFUND’s first conservation area financing initiative, focusing on supporting non-salary operational costs. The project was financed through a grant from the French Development Agency (AFD), amounting to EUR 2,000,000 (80%), and through the first use of BIOFUND’s endowment returns, totaling USD 500,000 (20%), between 2016 and 2021.
It covered eight beneficiary Conservation Areas, namely Limpopo National Park (LNP), Quirimbas National Park (QNP), Gilé National Park (GNP), Vilanculos Wildlife Sanctuary (VWS), Zinave National Park (ZNP), Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (BAP), and Maputo National Park (MNP).

Among the main results:
- over USD 2.4 million were channeled to support operational costs in the eight Conservation Areas;
- disbursement procedures were established, which are now used annually by BIOFUND to channel funds to beneficiary areas; and
- management capacity was strengthened among beneficiaries (CAs), which began to directly receive and manage funds.
The project laid the groundwork for the long-term continuity of conservation area financing, later leading to the creation of the Post-Bee Project. The positive results achieved through this first disbursement initiative were key to demonstrating BIOFUND’s ability to identify beneficiaries, directly allocate funds (to entities implementing on the ground), and monitor and report their use transparently and efficiently — strengthening donor confidence in channeling increasing resources through BIOFUND.
