As part of the celebrations marking International Ranger Day on 31 July 2026, five rangers from Mozambique’s conservation areas have been recognized through the 5th edition of the Ranger Support Fund, an initiative that celebrates dedication, professionalism, and outstanding contributions to biodiversity conservation.

Implemented through a partnership between Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), the Mozambican Safari Operators Association (AMOS), and the Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation (BIOFUND), the Fund was established to acknowledge the essential role rangers play in protecting wildlife, preserving ecosystems, and safeguarding the country’s natural heritage.

Created in 2020 following a donation from Dr. Carlos Lopes Pereira after receiving the Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa, and subsequently strengthened through BIOFUND’s support, the Fund has become an important platform for recognizing the commitment and achievements of conservation professionals working on the front lines of biodiversity protection.

This year’s edition brought together ten public and private conservation areas, which submitted a total of fourteen nominations. The candidates were assessed by a selection committee composed of representatives from ANAC, AMOS, and BIOFUND, based on criteria including professional performance, dedication, integrity, and contribution to conservation efforts.

The five rangers honored in 2026 are Julião Afonso Chirindza from Limpopo National Park, Fernando João Kocossene from Coutada 14 in Marromeu, Arlindo Soares Tivane from Pomene National Reserve, Loquinato José Taula from Maputo National Park, and Gustavo Sindial Zinave from Bazaruto Archipelago National Park.

Since its establishment, the Ranger Support Fund has recognized 25 rangers from 14 public and private conservation areas across Mozambique. By highlighting the achievements of these professionals, the initiative contributes to raising the profile of ranger work and reinforcing the importance of those who dedicate their lives to protecting wildlife and conserving biodiversity.

Through this continued partnership, ANAC, AMOS, and BIOFUND reaffirm their commitment to supporting and valuing rangers while strengthening conservation efforts throughout Mozambique.
